Inspiration

This past Sunday, I attended the Band of Horses, Grizzly Bear and Karen Elson concert in Brooklyn. The concert was so much fun! Not only were there fantastic live performances and cool people - but the view was phenomenal! This picture was taken from my iPhone - no Photoshop-ing necessary.

Belle d'Opium

Last Thursday (June 17,2010), Yves Saint Laurent relaunched their legendary Opium fragrance, newly labeled Belle d'Opium. Celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ashley Olsen and Alexis Bledel showed up at a Chelsea warehouse that was draped in black velvet to help kick off the scent the right way. The original Opium's 1977 NYC launch was held on a ship that was docked at the South Street Seaport. Ahh, those were the days . . .

Last week, while on one of my many shopping/inspiration trips I stumbled upon a vintage YSL Opium bottle at one of my favorite shops. Coincidence? I think not.

Tavi-tastic

Tavi - you know, the blogger who's 14 years old and sits front row in fashion shows next to people like Anna Wintour. Yea, her. Well, she will be guest-blogging for one of my favorite sites - Jezebel, this week. She is lined up to write about "feminism, and fashion, issues facing adolescents, and Daria". Love it!

Sidewalk Catwalk

Along Broadway, from 35th Street to 41st Street, mannequins have been dressed in designs created specifically for the sidewalk catwalk. Designers include Jason Wu, Norma Kamali, Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg, Betsey Johnson and other local favorites. This is a public art project put together by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District to showcase the talent coming from the Garment District as well as the fabrics produced locally. The pink slips will be coming off this Thursday, June 24 and will be on display until September 3.

On a side note, while taking pictures and inspecting the mannequins, I was sort of surprised not to see any type of security guarding them. Anyways, can't wait to see what some of our favorite and outrageous designers have up their sleeves . . . or should I say, under their covers.

Sweet Nothings

It's the weekend and you know what that means. Shopping! This week I was strolling in the LES to find some inspiration and stumbled across these fantastic pendants from In God We Trust. These brass, hand-engraved necklaces come in a variety of "sweet" sayings including the classic below. Lucky for you, you don't have to be in NYC to pick one of these beauties up, just go here. Happy shopping!

The Perfect Purse

Inspired by endangered birds (Hello - BP catastrophic oil spill...), the Marc by Marc Jacobs accessories are definitely worth going coo-coo over. Oooh, the patched leather and canvas, secure turnlock closure and lined with an oh so adorable polka dot print! I'm already drooling and am wishing it were already in my closet. Don't forget to check out his Resort 2011 collection too!

Crazy Hair Color

Both SS2010 and FW2010/11 runways showed models with colorful dyed hair that were shockingly beautiful. Everyone from celebrities to fashionistas are taking note and have come up with their own renditions. Are you willing to take a dip on the wild side?
Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen rocked neon painted hair on June 10, 2010. What do you think?

World's Oldest Shoe

*Photo & Article by The New York Times

Think of it as a kind of prehistoric Prada: Archaeologists have discovered what they say is the world’s oldest known leather shoe.
Perfectly preserved under layers of sheep dung (who needs cedar closets?), the shoe, made of cowhide and tanned with oil from a plant or vegetable, is about 5,500 years old, older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, scientists say. Leather laces crisscross through numerous leather eyelets, and it was worn on the right foot; there is no word on the left shoe.

Resort 2011

As the Resort 2011shows  come to an end, many designers want to update the word resort.  "I hate the word resort, and cruise is worse. Cruise is some woman in a warm-up suit at a buffet table," said Michael Kors. What does he suggest in lieu of resort?  - "destination".

Take a look at the latest shows here.

Mr. Brainwash

Check, check, check it out! What, what, what's it all about?

This past weekend, I checked out the Mr. Brainwash exhibit in the Meat Packing District. And let me tell you, it was cool. The moment you walked in, there was artwork everywhere - elephants made from recycled tires, a life-sized NYC yellow taxi in a Toys R Us plastic box, large scale graffiti inspired paintings and more. Check out the Icons Remix exhibition before it's too late!

You Know When You're A New Yorker When...

You know you're a New Yorker when you've seen this guy walking around. I usually see him at Union Square but this time I saw him in Midtown. His outfits are always quirky and this one is no exception.

Pixels

Check out this video by motiongrapher Patrick Jean. This ambitious video shows NYC being pixelated - Tetris blocks filling skyscrapers, Frogger leaping between yellow taxi cabs and more. You'll have to watch for yourself to see what else happens... and trust me, you'll want to see!

Yves Saint Laurent Resort 2011 Collection

Here is the latest from Yves Saint Laurent.  I love the vibrant pops of color and how the classic, sexy smoking jacket is paired with bloomer shorts. Don't forget to check out the other collections too - Chanel, Alexander Wang and Burberry Prorsum just to name a few highlights!

Smell This

I picked up Sloane Crosley's I Was Told There'd Be Cake on a whim. Also, If you know me at all, I'm never one to turn down any type of desert! This book is filled with short essays (the perfect length for the commute on the train) that cover a wide range of topics that include comparing life to the classic game Oregon Trail, getting locked out of your apartment twice in one day to handling unspeakable, hilarious circumstances with friends from the past.

Crosley's second book How Did You Get This Number, due out on June 15, 2010, is sure to be as clever and frank as her first book. Her writing style proves more than enough to us that we could easily be friends and exchange a few battle stories, no problem. Pick up her books and get ready to have a good laugh.
