Protégée of über cool footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood, Sophia Webster's debut resort collection has everyone abuzz.
Sophia Webster is a Cordwainers and Royal College of Art graduate and began her career working as an assistant to Nicholas Kirkwood for the past two years. She was discovered by Kirkwood and his business partner Christopher Suarez after Webster won two design competitions that they were judging.
Sophia's debut collection will launch in early spring 2013 and be manufactured in Brazil with the help of Kirkwood and Suarez.
"The thing I admire the most about any designer is the way they draw," she said. "I think that because my first love was always art, the sketching process is what I find more enjoyable and interesting. I really admire Manolo Blahnik and Edmundo Castillo - they are two shoe desigenrs who sketches I feel really tell a story and give the shoe a personality through the way they draw."
The starting point for Webster's spring/summer 2013 collection was a recent trip to visit her factory in Brazil. Everyone paints their houses in mad bright pastels which inspired the color palette," she explained. "I spent some time in Rio between factory visits and really loved it there. Even in the parts with the most extreme poverty the people and the landscape is so lively and colourful and I wanted to reflected that in the collection."
